The degree brings together creative writing with the more mechanical side of publishing your written materials. This is the programme for aspiring writers as it links into one programme the craft of writing with the practice of publishing.‌

This course will nurture your creative talent across a range of different forms - including short stories, screenplays, poetry, drama and novels – and combine creative writing as a reflective practice with practical and theoretical investigation of the exciting and changing world of publishing. Alongside form and genre writing options, you will take modules in research and archiving, following which you will create a major piece of work which may lead to publication; you will also be involved in real world publishing activity in a range of formats.  Throughout your three years you will have regular contact with, and support from, a range of different writers together with guest appearances by internationally respected poets, playwrights, scriptwriters and novelists.

Weekly workshop sessions will be held within which you will be encouraged to discuss your work with your community of fellow writers, and during the course of your studies, you will receive input on how best to prepare your work and that of others for a variety of marketplaces. Alongside this one-to-one tuition, you will also take courses on writing for the workplace, copywriting, publishing and marketing, including sessions on reviewing, editing and writing to brief.

There is a strong sense of community among students and staff, and the ratio of staff to students is such that students can have ready and easy access to all their lecturers. The small classes are always friendly and never intimidating, allowing staff to get to know their students on a first-name basis.

Assessment methods for the course draw upon a range of different forms and approaches that include a variety of written formats from modelling exercises, large and small scale creative projects, book reviews, literature surveys, reflective journals, oral presentations delivered both in a group and individually. In addition to summative assessments the programme also undertakes a range of formative assessments that may include one or more of the following: peer assessed work, group presentations, journals, internet postings.

Learning and Teaching methods

Teaching methods are designed to provide interest, variety and academic curiosity. Seminars, workshops and small group work are our principal means of teaching. We also offer one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss aspects of your work.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU: £9,000

International: £14,900

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.
