With its focus on the degree level study of teaching English as a Foreign Language, the degree pathway offers you the opportunity to pursue a distinctive thread of learning through all three years of your degree, a thread that will enhance your employability in Britain as well as abroad. This focus is combined with the study of English literature which includes study of the large historical picture of English studies (from Beowulf to Tom Wolfe) with a responsiveness to new directions and concerns precipitated by developments in critical and cultural theory.

There is a strong sense of community among students and staff, and the ratio of staff to students is such that students can have ready and easy access to all their lecturers. The small classes are always friendly and never intimidating, allowing staff to get to know their students on a first-name basis.

Typical modules include:

  • The Theory and Methodology of TEFL
  • Teaching Grammar and Acquiring Assessment Skills
  • The Essentials of the EFL Classroom (including teaching practice)
  • The Modern Novel

Reasons to choose this course include:

  • Research-active, published staff with expertise in literature, television, film, drama and writing
  • Modular choice
  • Strong vocational relevance
  • Regular trips, conferences, and events
  • Practical experience in the classroom
  • The opportunity to combine the study of literature and language
  • Educational applications at diverse levels
  • Combining TEFL experience with other areas of expertise

Students are assessed through a wide range of methods: mostly essays, some presentations, some (mostly seen) examinations where questions are supplied in advance to enable fair and detailed preparation. Option modules also offer creative or practice-based assessment (eg archiving, exhibition).

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

Career and employment opportunities include:

  • Teaching English as a foreign language in the UK and overseas
  • Media and publishing
