Heritage Studies with Digital Humanities is a programme that is designed to allow student to enhance their knowledge of various digital technologies and software by applying it to various aspects of the Heritage sector, be that museums, archives, management or tourism.

Heritage Studies and Digital Humanities will offer students the opportunity to combine two popular and cognate subject areas. In Heritage studies you will explore a wide range of Heritage-related issues and subjects. This will include modules on museums, and introduction to heritage, nautical archaeology, heritage and business, museums, representations and identity, battlefield archaeology and heritage and tourism. The programme includes a work placement at level 5 and time in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives at level 6. The programme offers a unique combination of the general and the particular; an awareness of wider and contemporary  Heritage issues and concerns, alongside a more concentrated focus upon different aspects of it. This mix will equip students with an attractive and appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the Heritage sector or cultural industries. For the Digital Humanities side of the degree, students will build links between Heritage and an emerging new sub-discipline, digital humanities, by bringing together experts from within computing science, digital media, and web design. The programme aims to investigate how such new, digital methodologies can enhance an understanding of and research into heritage, such as digitisation of archival materials, the use of technology in displays and exhibitions, the use of data collection and management software.

The programme builds upon a broad range of expertise from across the Faculty, and indeed across the University, notably from FADE and the Schools of Business, and Archaeology, History and Anthropology, and from various closely aligned partners such as the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) and the University of Wales. It also builds upon an extensive range of contacts with practitioners and professionals in the Heritage sector such as Wales' historic environment service CADW, the Royal Commission, local county councils, the National Trust and the National Library. It can draw upon relevant, indeed unique, resources and infrastructure, such as the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives and the local history museum run by the University in collaboration with Lampeter's local history society Hanes Llambed.

Assessment methods for the course draw upon a range of different forms and approaches that include a variety of written formats, from essays (ranging from 1,500 words up to 3,500 words in length), book reviews, literature surveys, short-1,000 word analyses, reflective journals, document analysis and palaeographic work, to oral presentations delivered both in a group and individually, and both seen and unseen examinations. In addition to summative assessments the programme also undertakes a range of formative assessments that may include one or more of the following: peer assessed work, group presentations, journals, internet searches, document analysis, and bibliographic exercises.

Learning and Teaching methods

Teaching methods are designed to provide interest, variety and academic curiosity. Seminars, workshops and small group work are our principal means of teaching, though supported by lectures, field trips, revision and study groups. We are also offer one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss aspects of your own written work such as asking for help with the structuring of essays, or writing technique or requesting feedback advice on a specific assignment.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU: £9,000

International: £14,900

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.

Joint honours students will study three Heritage modules at each level of study, choosing from the compulsory modules for that level. In addition they will choose three further modules from their other Humanities subject, again choosing from those on offer at that level of study.
