The programme in Heritage Studies will offer an innovative approach to study that combines an exploration of general and broadly based Heritage issues, with more specialist or particular aspects of the field. The programme will equip students with an understanding and appreciation of the wider field of Heritage, which includes a compulsory work placement at level 5 and time in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives at level 6. This provides students with both an attractive approach to study as well as equipping them with an appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the Heritage sector or cultural industries.

The programmes in Heritage studies is innovatively constructed to offer students choice over the areas they want to study. For the single honours Heritage Studies students will complete a compulsory 80 credits then choose a particular ‘themed’ pathway or study pathways for the remaining 40 credits. There are four study pathways:

Nautical Archaeology : Students will gain knowledge about the heritage surrounding the sea, the conservation of materials, the computerisation of structures and residues, the processes of acquisition and preservation. Particular focus during this pathway will be on the Newport Ship project, a medieval ship excavated in Newport and now on public display.Archives and Museums: this pathway also builds upon expertise in the areas of museology and archival management, and seen in a variety of modules covering archiving, display, on-going exhibitions of Egyptian artefacts, the interpretation of various Heritage materials, and the conservation of rare books and pamphlets.Digital Humanities: this pathway looks to build links between Heritage and an emerging new sub-discipline, digital humanities. The programme aims to investigate how such new, digital methodologies can enhance heritage, such as digitisation of archival materials, and the use of technology in displays and exhibitions.

Built Environment: this pathway delivered by colleagues from Swansea and looks to explore, interpret and understand the Heritage that lies all around us in the historic and built environment.

Assessment methods for the course draw upon a range of different forms and approaches that include a variety of written formats from essays (ranging from 1500 words up to 3500 words in length), book reviews, literature surveys, short 1000 word analyses, reflective journals, document analysis, palaeographic work, oral presentations delivered both in a group and individually, and both seen and unseen examinations. In addition to summative assessments the programme also undertakes a range of formative assessments that may include one or more of the following: peer assessed work, group presentations, journals, internet searches, document analysis, and bibliographic exercises.

Learning and Teaching methods

Teaching methods are designed to provide interest, variety and academic curiosity. Seminars, workshops and small group work are our principal means of teaching, though supported by lectures, field trips, revision and study groups. We are also offer one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss aspects of your on written work such as help with the structuring of essays, or writing technique or feedback advice on a specific assignment.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

The Careers Service subscribes to a range of careers databases and networks to ensure that you benefit from having access to the latest information. The Careers team is able to assist you to identify and plan your career by matching your interests and course of study to relevant jobs. The service also includes assistance with writing applications and CVs, interview techniques, Professional Development Planning (PDP), as well as general careers counselling for individuals and groups.

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

UK/EU: £9,000

International: £14,900

Tuition fees for years of study after your first year are subject to an increase of 3% for International students and at the capped fee rate as set by the UK Government for UK/EU students.

Joint Routes available

Joint honours students will study three Heritage modules at each level of study, choosing from the compulsory modules for that level. In addition they will choose three further modules from their other Humanities subject, again choosing from those on offer at that level of study.
