BA New Media Production
This programme is a multidisciplinary programme that equips students with specialist skills and knowledge in content creation for the contemporary media industry.
I really enjoyed doing work for the National Trust through the Live Project module. I made some really great contacts while working there and I have had voluntary job offers during the summer time. Working with them also opened my eyes to the many different types of media which is used even at the National Trust.
Storytelling, interactive design and meeting the needs of a web-based mobile audience are the hallmarks of our New Media course. By creating and combining genres such as film, animation, sequential art, photography, web design, mobile Apps and online magazines you will address the needs of the contemporary and future creative industries in compelling new ways. The course is working with Creative Skillset to ensure that it meets the current and future needs of industry and to give students access to industry leaders during their studies. On completion of their studies students will have gained experience of working in groups on productions, created their own individual projects, networked with industry professionals, had the opportunity to attend film and media festivals, and developed discipline, professionalism and confidence whilst working for external clients. This extensive range of experience, including life skills that are highly valued by employers, will give students a head start in gaining fulfilling employment.
Year 1 includes 6 core modules, concentrating on core skills. Year 2 combines 5 core modules and a practical project for a creative business, concentrating on the needs of industry. Year 3 combines 4 core modules and an extended Creative Project, concentrating on the student’s career progression. There are also many extra-curricular opportunities to engage in practical new media and filmmaking production work as well as attend industry events and festivals.

Students will gain a wide range of skills in new media storytelling, with an understanding of the needs of a particular audience and how to work professionally within the creative and cultural industries. They will experience working in a number of genres such as photography, filmmaking, web design, interactive media, mobile media, and user interface graphics and experience, using industry standard software on Apple Macintosh computers. They will also have learned how to pitch an idea, make presentations and work both individually and as part of a team on creative projects. They will work alongside industry professionals and explored options for future careers through specific modules such as Entrepreneurship in Film and Media where they can develop their own business ideas.

This course would be of particular interest to students who wish to develop their skills and confidence in order to work creatively in the film and media industries. Students that have a background of study or work in the fields of Media, Film, or Photography, or have completed the BTEC Creative Media Production or BTEC Art and Design (Interactive Media) are particularly welcome to apply.
- Two GCE A levels (12 units) or equivalent, plus grade C or above in English Language (or Welsh) at GCSE level (or equivalent), together with passes in another four approved subjects, or
- BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject, with minimum grades of Merit, or
- AVCE A level (12 units) in an appropriate subject, or
- Foundation Diploma, plus one GCE A level in a relevant academic subject, or
- Other qualifications considered to be equivalent by the Academic Board.

Applicants are normally interviewed, and interviews are informal and friendly. Applicants are requested to bring along a portfolio of recent photographic work for consideration and discussion. If you have them, bring visual research diaries or workbooks with you: we are interested in how you develop your work as well as the finished result. It is also an opportunity for us to gauge how well you would fit in and for you to get a sense of the university and the course.

Many of our students have been successful in gaining employment in the creative and cultural industries both in the UK and overseas, whilst others have enrolled in specialist post-graduate courses in film or gone on to study for research degrees.

Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities. However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, and printing.
Additional opportunities are available to students in the form of a year at our partner institution in Kuala Lumpur, the International University of Malaya-Wales. This University has partnered with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to deliver a range of contemporary media industry focused modules that enable students to move between campuses in their final year of study.
