An artist who will have appeal is one who is healthy, flexible, professional and unique. These are the artists who will succeed after graduating from this course. Very exciting!

Lauren Phillips, Actress (Gwaith Cartref, S4C)

This is an innovative and progressive course taught intensively over a period of two years by a combination of staff from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and experts working professionally in the areas of television, dance, entertainment, musicals and theatre. Due to the intensity of the course and the specialist training involved, please note that the number of places available annually on the course is limited.

The majority of the course is delivered in a dedicated arts centre in Cardiff, with a specified period spent on the Carmarthen Campus. There will also be an opportunity for students to spend time studying at a foreign university where a different perspective is provided on aspects of the creative industries.

The core of the course will be to develop the voice and body and around these modules, there will be an opportunity to focus on areas such as the actor’s craft, choreography, work experience and foreign study. The course will be practical in nature with regular opportunities to perform and show progress. We will offer appropriate training that will give due attention to the individual artist’s progress and development by focussing on four aspects:

The Performer’s Voice: Maintaining and projecting the voice, acting, articulation, accents, individual and choral singing, estill, microphone technique, radio work

The Performer’s Body: Loosening the body (Alexander technique, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi), dance (tap, bale, jazz), gesture, mask, clowning, mime, stage craft, stage fighting etc.

The Performer’s Mind: Building a character, interpreting, context research, psychology, history of the theatre, musical theory

The Performer’s Career: Preparing interviews, work experience, creating a CV, professional pictures, preparing a showreel, showcase, preparing for self-employment, enterprise and managing finance

During the two years, students will have opportunities to develop a range of skills and an understanding of the industry which they need to foster to enable them to work professionally and to take advantage of the increasing demand for skilled, flexible and reliable performers who can combine acting and/or musical talent at the highest level.

There is great emphasis within this particular degree on links with the industry. Professional practitioners will work with students throughout their period of study. Consequently our students will benefit substantially from the experiences, contacts and expertise of these practitioners. All these contacts and various work experience opportunities offered will provide a strong foundation in order to ensure future employment within the creative industries.

A substantial part of the course will be taught at the Gate centre in Cardiff. This centre is situated in an area where there are plenty of houses reserved specifically for the city’s students. Students can either look for accommodation themselves or the University – through a formal partnership with a house renting agency in Cardiff – can arrange that specific houses are available for use by students registering on the BA Perfformio course.

The University will be in a position to report further regarding this partnership during the 2015 auditions.

Home of CBC

The Gate Arts Centre is the home of CBC. The homely atmosphere of this location provides a very special opportunity for the students to develop. There are dedicated spaces available for all aspects of the course: a multi-purpose theatre, two dance studios and also a rehearsal studio that will offer the students a complete experience within one building.

In addition there are areas to relax between lectures in the Coffee Bar and quiet study areas within the building.
