Levels of Qualifications

Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) - Level 4

A Certificate of Higher Education is a Level 4 qualification and is equivalent to the first year of a full-time honours degree programme. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 120 credits. The successful completion of a Certificate of Higher Education can lead into the second year of an appropriate Foundation Degree or an honours degree programme.

Diploma of Higher Education (Dip HE) - Levels 4 & 5

A Diploma of Higher Education is a Level 5 qualification and is equivalent to the first two years of a full-time honours degree programme. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 240 credits. The successful completion of a Diploma of Higher Education can lead into the third year of an appropriate honours degree programme.

Foundation Degree (FdA / FdSc) - Levels 4 & 5

A Foundation Degree is an employment-related qualification at higher education level. It is designed to equip individuals with the higher-level skills and knowledge that not only meet the needs of the employer, but also offer the opportunity to develop personally and professionally. It is partly work-based and projects and assignments relate to individual’s role within the workplace. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 240 credits. The successful completion of a Foundation Degree can lead into the third year of an appropriate honours degree programme.

Higher National Certificate and Diploma (HNC / HND) Levels 4 & 5

Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas are designed to be work-related and  vocational in nature. What sets HNCs and HNDs apart from a bachelor degree is that the foundation of both qualifications is to ensure that students receive skills and knowledge for a career in a related industry. These qualifications can be completed within two years if full time study is undertaken. For students with personal or professional commitments there is an option for students to complete both qualifications  on a part time basis.

Bachelor's Degree (BA / BSc / BEng) - Levels 4, 5, 6

A Bachelor's honours degree is Level 6 qualification and normally requires three years of full-time study. The majority of programmes are modular, and therefore are available on a part-time basis, either during the day, or during the evening and occasional Saturdays. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 360 credits.

Graduate Certificate (Grad Cert) and Graduate Diploma (Grad Dip) - Level 6

Graduate Certificates and Diplomas are designed for those who have already attained a Level 6 qualification in another discipline. To achieve the qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 60 credits (for the Certificate) or 120 credits (for the Diploma).

Postgraduate/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – Level 6 or 7

The Postgraduate and Professional Graduate Certificates in Education are designed for graduates who wish to train as teachers. To achieve the Postgraduate Certificate qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 120 credits, with a minimum of 40 at Level 7 and the remainder at Level 6. To achieve the Professional Graduate Certificate qualification, students must obtain a minimum of 120 credits at Level 6.

Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) - Level 7

A Postgraduate Certificate is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have attained a minimum of  60 credits, either as a named award or as part of study towards a Master’s degree at the University.

Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) - Level 7

A Postgraduate Diploma is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have attained a minimum of 120 credits, either as a named award or as part of study towards a Master’s degree at the University.

Master’s Degree (MA / MSc / MTh / MBA / MEng / MSc) - Level 7

A Master’s degree is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have attained a minimum of  180 credits, 60 credits of which comprise an extended piece of research or similar in-depth study.

Master of Ministry (MMin) - Level 7

The MMin is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have attained a minimum of 180 taught credits.

Master of Research (MRes) - Level 7

The MRes is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have attained a minimum of 180 credits, 120 credits of which comprise an extended piece of research.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) - Level 7

The MPhil is a Level 7 qualification awarded to candidates who have successfully completed a programme of advanced study and research, the results of which are judged to constitute a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge and/or an original contribution to learning or knowledge. The research is submitted in the form of a 60,000 word thesis, completed within 2 to 3 years (for students studying full-time)).

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Level 8

The PhD is a Level 8 qualification awarded to candidates who have successfully completed a programme of advanced study and research, the results of which are judged to constitute an original contribution to learning or knowledge. The research is submitted in the form of a 100,000 word thesis, completed within 3 to 5 years (for students studying full-time).

Professional Doctorate (DProf) – Level 8

The Professional Doctorate is a Level 8 qualification that integrates professional and academic knowledge. It is awarded to candidates who have successfully completed a taught and research programmes of study comprising  540 credits at Levels 7 and 8, with a minimum of 360 credits at Level 8. The research is submitted in the form of a 60 000 word thesis and (where appropriate) portfolio, completed within 3 to 5 years (for students studying full-time).

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) - Level 8

The Doctor of Business Administration is a professional doctorate designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the areas of business administration and management.
