PGCE Business Studies - Rewarding and Inspiring

Our 2015 PGCE graduates are now just over half-way through their first year of teaching as fully qualified teachers.  We recently caught up with PGCE Business Studies graduate Lauren Hopkins to find out how she was getting on in her role teaching in Maesteg Comprehensive School. Her response? "Maesteg - one word AMAZING!!! I couldn't ask for a better department or whole school support team."

We then asked her how she had found the PGCE course and whether she felt prepared for the work she is doing now.

Lauren says, "The PGCE was not only the most rewarding year of my academic career but also the most inspiring. I can honestly say hand on heart if it wasn't for the guidance, help and support from the University I would not be the teacher I am today. Although at times you feel as if the hard work is for nothing, if it wasn't for all the essays and research conducted through my training I would not be able to successfully fulfil my current job at Maesteg Comprehensive School.

For me personally one of the main highlights of the PGCE was the Enhancement Experience with Swansea City FC (not only for the reason of gaining a summer job). The experience of teaching out in the community for mixed ability children from deprived backgrounds really drilled home to me why I've always wanted to teach. And this was all set up by UWTSD all I had to do was apply.

The business studies PGCE group of 2014-2015 was such a close knit group I can say that they are my friends for life. I know two of my best friends from the course will be lifelong friends to the point that we now speak daily after every teaching day (the magic of what's app) and if it wasn't for the course I suppose we would never have met. I was once told in a lecture that you will find no other job like teaching I can honestly say I couldn't agree more because the good days most definitely outweigh the bad and I would not be where I am as a teacher and within my career without UWTSD and specifically the Business studies PGCE."
