I knew I wanted to work in Motorsport, but wasn’t 100% sure in what area. I was leaning towards design. I spoke to a lot of universities at the Autosport Show in Birmingham, and UWTSD: Swansea really stood out. They were helpful, flexible, realistic and their course was a perfect mix of hands-on and theory.

I came to UWTSD: Swansea (then known as SIHE) with a Certificate in Mechanical Engineering from Cork Institute of Technology (CIT).

My time in Swansea was very enjoyable, and the subjects covered are still useful to this day. The lecturers were professional and most importantly, very approachable. The facilities available for all aspects of the course were very good also.

After getting my degree, my first job in motorsport was with a small race team in Oxford. With a small team, you have to do a bit of everything, from loading and unloading trucks, to mechanic, to rebuilding and maintenance, to pit-stops. I also got stuck into data acquisition, and it was from there I found what I really wanted to do. Working directly with the driver to help him get the car set-up the way he was looking for.

From there I worked with Prodrive in the Customer Engineering Department. We supported customer Subaru WRC cars all over the world, providing advice on set-up, adjusting engine and transmission calibrations to help the driver.

In 2013, I moved to Volkswagen Motorsport, to be Andreas Mikkelsen’s Chassis Engineer. I am responsible for the build and specification of the Chassis’ built for Andreas throughout the WRC season all within and conforming to the FIA regulations. On tests and rallies, I work with the driver to find a suitable setup that he is happy with. It is a very competitive and rewarding job, and I would not be here without my time in Swansea Institute (UWTSD SWANSEA).
