Welcome to UWTSD Information Technology & Systems iPad webpage. Here you will find everything you need to know about iPads, how to get one, what they can be used for and how to connect your iPad to UWTSD systems including Email and Departmental Shared Data.

‌iPads are increasingly being used more in a move towards paperless meetings, they can be used to access all your documents and shared data through the recommended free apps and are also used for accessing emails, materials on the web and for taking notes of meetings. If your department has any recommended apps that you feel would benefit other users then please email itservicedesk@uwtsd.ac.uk and we will consider adding them to our recommended apps section.

Below you will find guides on setting up your iPad including how to connect to UWTSD Systems including email, useful tips on getting the most from your iPad, apps that we recommend you download and FAQ's such as how to setup an iTunes account.

There is currently a great demand for iPads in the University. As a result of this demand over the past year Information Services has been investigating how best to manage these devices and how they fit into future plans.

We undertook a number of trials (including use of iPads for meetings and feedback from users) and have recently purchased Airwatch software to manage our iPad environment.

Information Technology & Systems support iPads within the University and the purchase of them through the central IT budget. We currently offer support for University owned, funds for purpose and personal iPads for details please read the iPad Support Policy pdf document.

Please note though that in order to maintain an effective budget and to meet business needs that all requests for iPads when going through the central IT budget will need to have a business case supporting them.

‌‌Apple have announced an update to the iOS software that runs your iPad, iPhone and iPod. The latest software will be iOS 7 which is packed with new features. The release date has been announced for 18th September 2013, for information on the new update see the Apple website.

On your iPad, iPhone or iPod go to Settings > General > Software Update in order to download & update to the latest iOS. It is recommended that you plug your iPad in to a power supply whilst the update is being applied. We recommend that you ensure you have a full backup of your device before updating.

If you are running iOS 4 or an earlier version of iOS then you will need to update via iTunes. Make sure you backup your device first before applying the update. More information on updating your iOS can be found on the Apple Website.

Here are our top 10 tips to get you started:

  1. Change your email signature
    •   To do this, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Signature and enter a new signature.
  2. Create folders
    • To create a folder all you need to do is tap and hold on an app until they all start to jiggle, then drag the app over another icon and release. Your iPad will create a folder with both the apps in. The folder will be named according to the category of the apps it contains, but you can rename it as you like.
  3. Access all running apps
    • Double-clicking the Home button shows you all the apps that are running in a bar along the bottom of the screen. To switch to a running app just tap on it, just swipe the screen downwards to remove this bar
  4. Side button - Orientation Lock or Mute?
    • You can choose between Orientation Lock or Mute on the iPad, head to Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: to choose between Lock Rotation and Mute.
  5. Control iPad notifications
    • By going to Settings > Notifications, you can decide which apps can pop up alerts, which have notifications at the top of the screen and which appear in Notification Center.
  6. Stop asking to join Wi-Fi networks
    • If you're fed up of getting bugged by messages asking if you'd like to join this or that Wi- Fi network all the time then head to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Ask to Join Networks.
  7. Use an Apple keyboard
    • Missing a real keyboard? Any Apple Wireless Keyboard will work with the iPad. In fact, your iPad will work with any Bluetooth keyboard. Some iPad cases have a keyboard built in, which can be handy.
  8. Connect to an HD TV
    • You can connect the iPad 2 and new iPad to your HD television using Apple's Digital AV Adapter or a plain old Apple VGA Adaptor. More info can be found on the Apple Store.
  9. Copy and paste
    • You can quickly copy and paste text by tapping and holding down, and then choosing Select to select the exact portion of text you'd like the copy. Next tap Copy, then go to a different app, and tap and hold down again, then tap Paste from the menu that appears. Top tip: To select an entire paragraph of text you need to tap four times.
  10. Find My iPhone (or iPad)
    • Apple's Find My iPad works for all iCloud users. In Settings > iCloud, enter your Apple ID and then turn Find My iPad on near the bottom of the screen. Now if you lose your iPad, you can go to www.icloud.com or use Find My iPhone on another device to locate the iPad. If you have a Wi-Fi-only model, it will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network for this to work.
  • How to set up an iTunes Store account?
You can find detailed instructions on how to setup an iTunes Store account using either your iPad, iPhone, iPod or a Computer using iTunes on the Apple Website.
  • I have forgotten my Apple ID password.
The easiest way to reset your Apple ID password is by going to the App Store on your device - select Top 25 and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Tap on your Apple ID and choose iForgot. You then need to supply your Apple ID email address in order to send a reset email. For additional help resetting your password visit the Apple Website.
  • What version of iOS do I have?
You can find your version of iOS by going to Settings > General > About and look for Version.
