UWTSD lecturer’s Charles Hawtrey tribute show is highlighted as Pick of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016

08.08.2016

A one-man show penned by University of Wales Trinity Saint David lecturer Dave Ainsworth has been chosen as a Pick of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016 – the largest arts festival in the World.

Oh Hello! is a tribute to Charles Hawtrey, one of the best-loved stars of the Carry On films, who brought laughter to millions with his wimpish characters and cheeky innuendo. But away from the cameras he was crippled with loneliness and faced a huge battle with the bottle. And it’s the actor’s demons which are brutally highlighted in the one-man drama which has been produced by the Torch Theatre.

Dave played Hawtrey when the play was premiered more than a decade ago, it’s now been revived by Jamie Rees, who stars in the new version, which is directed by Peter Doran who is the Artistic Director at The Torch and who also directed the first show. Dave, who is currently Programme Director for Acting BA (Hons) and Theatre Design and Production BA (Hons) at UWTSD said he was delighted that the play has achieved so much success.

He said: “I’m very excited about the success of Oh Hello!. It won the Laurel prize last year and this year has been selected for the ‘Pick of the Fringe’. Last year it sold out at the Fringe completely and won many excellent reviews. It’s so rewarding when something you have written has had so much positive feedback. I continually tell my students in Performing Arts that research, industry and tenacity bring their own rewards and Oh Hello! has proved that to be the case.”

Dave who is also a Personal Tutor to all third year Acting Students at UWTSD, is a former actor and stand-up comedian. He has performed all across the country, Canada and the USA and also ran Three Comedy Clubs in the heart of London. Dave has written many plays that have been performed professionally, including Who’s Afraid of Rachel Roberts, Malvolio in Stockings, Wasteland, Noe Two Thynges are More Equal and a novel in 1999, Silly Mid Off. He was a member of the Torch Theatre Company and has been an actor in nine of their productions. He is now a Board Member for the Torch Theatre.

Note to Editor

Oh Hello! has been chosen as a pick of the Fringe by Mervyn Stutter’s 25th Pick of the Fringe. Each year, Merv puts together three separate teams of Arts professionals who go out onto the Fringe and sit through hundreds of shows. These teams are drawn from all parts of the Arts Industry, each with their own expertise, and each team works for one week of the Fringe. This ensures a wonderful mix of styles and influences, and it keeps the showcases fresh and vibrant for entire run.
