It is expected to facilitate the exchange of ideas and concepts that will create collaborations and inspire a new generation of innovative products, solutions and cultural endeavours from across Wales and beyond.

UWTSD’s James Moxey, Director of Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre (CIRIC) said: “The Festival of Innovation will create a unique opportunity to bring together creative practitioners from Ireland and Wales. As part of the week, FORM, a group of designer makers and crafts people from Ireland will be travelling to Swansea College of Art (SCA), UWTSD to meet Welsh practitioners, exchange ideas and discuss latest developments in the sector.

“FORM, representing members from the Carlow region of Ireland, will meet members of staff from UWTSD and learn about the work underway at SCA. UWTSD Staff have expertise in traditional design and craft practice but they are also combining these with some of the latest innovations in digital technology including laser cutting, 3D Printing, water-jet cutting and CNC milling.

James said the event would enable these digital innovations, often the domain of the engineer or scientist, to be explored and discussed in terms of creative design and arts practice.

“The creative industries is a priority sector for Welsh Government and this will be a great opportunity for creative people from two European nations to meet and learn from each other; an ideal opportunity to explore the potential for creative collaborations across borders,” he added.

As part of the event FORM will visit the Mission Gallery in Swansea which has close links with UWTSD. FORM will also visit Craft in the Bay in Cardiff, the exhibition and craft retail space of The Makers Guild in Wales.

The event takes place on the June 30 and includes presentations and a tour of SCA. There are a limited number of places available (10 in total) to attend this event. If you are a designer-maker, craft practitioner or teacher and wish to attend the event please contact ciric@uwtsd.ac.uk

Registration starts at 11am on June 30.
