13.09.2016

The Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is the proud sponsor of the 24th conference of the European Society for Astronomy in Culture (SEAC) in Bath this week.

Dr Nicholas Campion, a distinguished academic from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Director of the University’s Sophia Centre, is a co-chair for SEAC along with Dr Lionel Simms of the University of East London.

Dr Campion said: "Astronomy is a vital but often neglected part of human culture. Sponsoring the SEAC conference offers the University and the Sophia Centre a chance to contribute to the development of the new academic discipline of “Cultural Astronomy”’.

SEAC was founded to promote: the interdisciplinary study of astronomical practise in its cultural context as a topic of considerable importance within the general study of human societies and their relationship to their environment.

The speakers for SEAC 2016 were chosen for this year's theme:

The Marriage of Astronomy and Culture: Theory and Method in the Study of Cultural Astronomy. The conference programme and speaker abstracts can be viewed here:
