UWTSD Events Management graduate secures role with Dorchester Collection

University of Wales Trinity Saint David graduate, Sophie Brew, has secured a place on the Ultimate Leaders Programme with Dorchester Collection.  Sophie who graduated recently with a BA (Hons) in Events Management with Placement Year will start in her new role in April 2018.

Through the Ultimate Leaders Programme Sophie will specialise in Food and Beverages, an interest she developed during her year in America as part of her degree course.  She spent a year working at The Little Nell, a 5 Star boutique ski resort in Aspen, Colorado and has been invited back to work at the same resort for a further Ski season before she starts with Dorchester Collection next year.  During her year in Aspen Sophie made quite an impact as she was awarded an award for one of the best employees during that year – an award that is usually only given to well-established staff members.    

Dorchester Collection is a luxury hotel operator owned by the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) and owns and manages 10 luxury five star hotels including The Dorchester, The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air.  Sophie is extremely excited at the prospect of working at these sort of establishments and is extremely grateful for the opportunities she’s had through her course at UWTSD.     

Since ending her studies Sophie has been busy helping with the grand opening of a brand new pizzeria and bar in Porthcawl.  Sophie is currently Assistant Manager at Double Zero Pizza.  After the graduation ceremony Sophie Brew said:

“I’ve had an amazing four years being a part of the Business School campus at the University Of Wales Trinity Saint David.  When I first started in 2013 the first thing that attracted me to this University was the opportunity to do a work placement for up to one year in another country. Working in places like Dubai and America were just a dream at first but I soon realised that if you work hard you’ll succeed and these sort of opportunities are a real possibility. 

As my time at the University came to an end I was recently invited to a special graduate open day at The Dorchester hotel in London for a place on the Dorchester Collection Ultimate Leaders Programme. The interviewing process was very challenging but the support I’ve received through the course has been excellent and I was fully prepared for the interviewing process.  The interviewing process included a 90 second video of ourselves, presentations, group activities and one to one interviews and was very intense.  However, the experiences and knowledge I’ve gained through my degree put me in a great position.  My year at the Little Nell Ski Resort, as part of my course, was an unbelievable experience and there’s no doubt that without that opportunity I wouldn’t be in this position today.  My future career path looks amazing and I wouldn’t have had any of these opportunities without UWTSD.”

The exciting BA Events Management degree course prepares students for management careers in the tourism, travel, hospitality and events sectors.  This year the School of Tourism and Hospitality celebrated fantastic NSS Results, with their courses scoring 87% Overall Student Satisfaction. This score ranks the department’s programmes as the best in Wales for Student Satisfaction.  Ms Jacqui Jones, Programme Director for International Travel, Tourism, Events and Leisure Management added:

"I’m so pleased for Sophie – she deserves all the success in the world.  She’s a very hardworking individual and has made the most of every opportunity that has come her way and I know she’ll be very successful.

As a department we put a huge emphasis on providing our students with the best experiences and opportunities to prepare them for working at the highest level within this very competitive industry.  Throughout the course students focus on developing their employability skills and industry knowledge with exciting field study trips within the UK and overseas, event based internships and placements as well as a range of supporting lectures, tutorials, industry presentations and event-focused activities.  On graduating, students from this programme have a very successful track record in securing a range of management and operational positions within the vibrant event management industry locally as well as UK-wide and globally.
