UWTSD to be represented at Hub Cymru Africa event in Swansea

23.03.2017

As part of a growing partnership focused on international development, UWTSD will be represented at an all-day event in Swansea on 3 April entitled No Limits - Youth and International Development.

Aimed at 16-32 year olds, the event is hosted by Hub Cymru Africa and promises a fun, interactive and engaging day to learn more about international development, hear voices of young activists from across the country, learn, network and meet other young people with similar interests.

There will be a series of interactive workshops with youth organisations on volunteering in Wales and Africa, how to get involved in the sector and how to influence local AMs and MPs. YCARE International will host a workshop on their International Citizen Service (ICS) which is making opportunities possible for young UK volunteers to work on a one-to-one basis with their peers in Bangladesh, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Senegal.  Intergrate will look at how youth be effective  agents for change in their community and globally.

Representing UWTSD will be Andy Bevan, who lectures at the School of Humanities and Performing arts at Lampeter. Andy worked for 16 years with VSO, supporting technical development projects in Africa, and is now helping to launch a new BA degree course in International Development, Humanitarianism and Law at UWTSD’s Lampeter campus.

“I look forward to taking part in this important conference in my home town on 3 April”, said Andy. “It will be a great opportunity to showcase our plans for international development studies in Lampeter, linking issues of humanitarian relief to an examination of the powerful Western hierarchies in finance and trade which control wealth and wellbeing on a global scale.”

Fadhili Maghiya, Diaspora and Inclusion Officer at Hub Cymru Africa said: “This free event is aimed at young people interested in global issues and who are keen get involved and learn about the many opportunities available to them, we are delighted to have UWTSD on board.”

The Hub Cymru Africa partnership is supported by the Welsh Government and hosted by the Welsh Centre for International Affairs at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff.
