Lloyd Macey, star of the X Factor has today (07.11.17) graduated with a first class honours degree from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Lloyd Macey 2 grad

Twenty-three year old Lloyd Macey, who hails from the Rhondda, finished his course at UWTSD in the summer where he studied the Welsh medium BA Perfformio (Performance) degree programme in Cardiff.  He graduated today along with his twelve fellow students – the first cohort to study this pioneering new course.

Lloyd is very proud to have studied with the University and attributes the development of his voice and his performance skills to what he’s learnt during his time on the BA Perfformio course in Cardiff.

“I’m very proud to have studied the BA Perfformio course at UWTSD – it gave me the opportunity to grow and develop as a performer and to find my own voice, says Lloyd.

“I don’t think I would ever have gone for the X Factor if I hadn’t done this course. I’d always sung and I’d had experience of singing before but it gave me the confidence and it taught me so much about myself.  It taught me how to channel my nerves….to think I can sing in front of millions of people every weekend… two years ago, I would never have been able to do it. So no way, I would never have done the X Factor if it hadn’t been for all the hard work and effort that the lectures put into this course.

“We were encouraged to explore all aspects of performance before deciding what we want to focus on - we were given so many different experiences.  We also worked with a huge range of professional performers and directors from the world of theatre and television throughout the duration of the course - people who have seen our progress and witnessed our development.

“I don’t think I would have had the courage and self-belief to audition for The X Factor if it hadn’t been for all the wonderful opportunities and experiences I received during my time on the course.”

Eilir Owen Griffiths, the programme director of the BA Perfformio course is delighted with Lloyd’s progress in the competition and his very proud of his former student’s achievements.

“Lloyd has such natural singing ability,” says Eilir Owen-Griffiths, course director of BA Perfformio.

“When I established the Welsh medium BA Perfformio (Performance) course in Cardiff, my aim was to create a course that would prepare the students for all kinds of performance opportunities - whether in a theatre, on television or on stage at a concert hall. Therefore, seeing one of our graduates getting through to the final rounds of a TV programme that’s watched by millions fills me with enormous pride.

“I remember Lloyd's first audition for the course when he sang the Welsh song Anfonaf Angel - there was something very special about that voice. Indeed, Lloyd was one of the first students on this innovative new course and it’s been wonderful to see him develop as a performer and seeing his confidence grow.  He’s now holding his own in a very challenging competition and we wish him the very best of luck in the live shows.”

Established by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the BA Perfformio course is an innovative and progressive course taught intensively over a period of two years by a combination of staff from UWTSD and experts working professionally in the areas of television, dance, entertainment, musicals and theatre.

One of the guest tutors on the course is Terry Dyddgen-Jones – one of the UK’s most respected television drama producer / directors who’s worked in on hugely popular series' such as Coronation StreetEastEndersEmmerdale and Hollyoaks.

According Terry, who taught Lloyd during his studies: “Lloyd is a great combination of talent and genuine humility. He is grounded in his valleys background and consequently can move seamlessly in all walks of life. I wish him well, as he will be a great ambassador not only to his university but to his country as well.”

Acclaimed theatre director, Elen Bowman, also teaches on the course and is very pleased with Lloyd’s progress in The X Factor.

“Lloyd always gives 100% and it’s fantastic to see him succeed on The X Factor stage.  With that superb voice, Lloyd deserves all the praise he’s gettting.

“Lloyd – keep smiling and keep gowing. I’m watching you all the way.”

Taught at the Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff, the fundamental ethos of the BA Perfformio course is to provide a solid technique along with a broad understanding of the creative industries in Wales and beyond.  Because of the intensity of the course and the specialist training associated with it, places on the course are limited.

Staff and students across all UWTSD campuses are all wishing Lloyd well and look forward to seeing him perform in The X Factor live finals.
