UWTSD to host ‘Mind and Morals’ Philosophy conference

18.01.2018

A conference entitled ‘Mind and Morals’, which aims to engage school-aged pupils in philosophical ideas and issues, will be held on the University’s Lampeter campus later this month.

Plato-and-Aristotle

This one-day conference will introduce pupils to a range of philosophical topics connected to ethics, psychology, and philosophy.  In particular discussions will centre around the nature of the self, the mind-body problem, free will and determinism, functionalism, philosophical zombies, theories of perception, moral luck, and personal identity – all areas which are covered within the AQA Philosophy syllabus.

Speakers at this year’s conference include Prof. David Cockburn, Dr David Morgans and Dr Tristan Nash.  Conference organiser, Dr Rebekah Humphreys, will open the conference with a talk entitled ‘The Mind-Body Problem, Perception, and Philosophical Zombies’.  Dr Rebekah Humphreys, who is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Lecturer in Philosophy at UWTSD, said:

“We’re very much looking forward to welcoming everybody to our Lampeter campus.  Here at UWTSD we are keen to introduce more further-education students to philosophy, as well as to engage school-aged pupils in philosophical ideas and issues, and in rigorous critical thinking.

There is no doubt that School leavers will be thrust into a climate in which global problems present a pressing if not urgent need for solutions, and these solutions will require a level of enquiry, clarification and justification that is nowhere better learnt, developed and honed than through a study of the discipline of philosophy.  During the conference, we hope to introduce areas of study which will enable school and college students to become aware of not only what philosophy is, but of how a study of the discipline at HE level could equip the next generation with some of the essential tools required for presenting solutions to pressing issues.”
