A University of Wales Trinity Saint David Student has Secured an Internship with a Swansea based Design and Marketing Studio

22.05.2015

University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) BA Graphic Design student, Hannah Millar, has secured an internship at the creative design agency Waters Creative. For the past four years Waters Creative has provided a work placement for the students on the Graphic Design BA programme at UWTSD.

Rhian Hullin, Director at Waters Creative and a UWTSD Alumni said:

“Students gain experience in working and seeing first-hand the creative processes and pressures experienced in a busy, professional environment.

“Working on a mixture of portfolio enhancing creative projects and live client briefs, the interns gain experience of how a creative design studio works and discovering what it’s like working with real client expectations in mind. This is an invaluable opportunity and helps the students decide on their future employment options.

“From our experience of working with young, keen and creative students, we have found that it helps drive the full time designers at Waters Creative to stay ahead of the game, and constantly pushing creative boundaries. The Designers also learn how to brief junior designer efficiently, which is a tricky skill to master.”

The BA Graphice Design Course at UWTSD is driven by industry standards and supported by state-of–the-art technologies. Links with business and industry are key to the programme and are maintained and developed through ‘live’ projects, work placements, visiting professionals and educational visits.

Speaking about her experience at UWTSD Hannah said:

“In a word, I found the entire Graphic Design course magical. The lecturers are simply fabulous in their teaching and mentoring. I'm still in awe of them and owe them so much. I'm very thankful for having them on the Graphics team. I've been shown new methods, how to improve my own methods and just how far my potential can reach.

“Thanks to Gav and Donna's (Gavin Kirby and Donna Williams, senior lecturers at UWTSD) joint module of Marketing, Promotion and Exhibition I have had a debriefing as to what to expect within the working world. Also we were taught how to promote ourselves and protect ourselves as freelance designers."

Rhian continued:

“As an Alumni of UWTSD, I can only praise the lecturers, for their time, their patience and the knowledge that they have passed onto me. I felt confident in my skills and ability to step into the Real World of Design when I graduated. The course was varied, and focussed on the Commercial aspect of Graphic Design ensuring we were all “Work ready.

“The design staff at Waters Creative are nearly all ‘products’ of the BA Graphic Design course and understand the needs of the students on the placement, time is given to them and each student comes away from the internship with a substantial project and positive experience."

David La Grange, Graphic Design Programme Director at UWTSD said:

“Graphic Design is an expanding and ever changing industry, creating a vast spectrum of opportunity. Our graduates are successfully working freelance, forming award-winning design agencies of their own, or securing sought-after positions with both well known national companies and major global brands, including Marks & Spencer, Sky and Aston Villa FC.”
