The Reverend Ralph Waller is a British academic and Methodist minister. He is Principal of Harris Manchester College, Oxford and Director of the Farmington Institute for Christian Studies. He currently serves as a Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

He was born in Lincolnshire and educated at the University of London (BD) and the University of Nottingham (MTh) and completed a PhD at King’s College London with a thesis on Theology. He is a Master of Arts of the University of Oxford.

Dr Waller teaches and researches in 19th and 20th century church history and religious thought, although more recently he has been drawn into the 18th century with his biography of John Wesley. He is currently writing a book on Religion and Money in the Eighteenth Century. In 1994 he was awarded the UK Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. Dr Waller is a former Chairman of the Faculty of Theology in the University of Oxford.

He is a Trustee of various charitable trusts and a Governor of Alleyn’s School and Cumberland Lodge, in Windsor Great Park.

As Director of the Farmington Institute, Dr Waller leads an organisation whose aim it is to support and encourage teachers of Religious Education in schools, and Headteachers working on values and standards. Financed by the Farmington Trust, the Institute awards Fellowships to UK teachers of Religious Education in schools and headteachers, publishes discussion papers and arranges conferences.

UWTSD is one of a small number of UK institutions who support the work of the Farmington Institute and its Fellows.

Upon receiving his Fellowship, Dr Waller said: “It gives me enormous pleasure to be here today and I would like to say a very big thank you for the honour that you have bestowed upon me.

“I have a strong belief in the importance of training teachers and I am delighted to be associated with a university which, for nearly 170 years, has trained outstanding teachers. I have a deep sense of gratitude to this university for the way in which you have looked after Farmington Fellows – school teachers who have been given Fellowships to do practical research which will help them and others teaching. No University in the UK, and we use about 12 universities, does this better than UWTSD. You have not only given them great professional support and good facilities, but you have also given them discerning encouragement, which is the great secret of education.

“Ever since I have been interested in Theology I have had an admiration for St. David’s College in Lampeter, now a part of UWTSD. The staff over the years have made a major contribution to the study of Theology.”

“On this day I would like to say a huge thank you to the Vice-Chancellor who I hold in great admiration, affection and gratitude.”
