Honorary Fellowship for Leading Figure in Welsh Media

08.07.2015

(l to r) The Venerable Randolph Thomas, Huw Eurig Davies and Professor Medwin Hughes. One of Wales’ leading media figures and co-founder of production company Boomerang, Huw Eurig Davies, has received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (06/07/15).

Huw Eurig Davies was born in Pembrokeshire but brought up in Cardiff, and throughout his life has stayed within a stone’s throw of these two square miles. After attending Ysgol Gynradd Bryntaf, he went to Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari and on from there to graduate in Welsh from Cardiff University. He now lives in Cowbridge with his wife Emma, and children Anni and Efan. However he still travels back and forth to Pontiago in Pencaer, where the roots of his extended family lie.

Mr Davies established Boomerang in 1994 with two friends. Over the years he has led the company strategy, which has seen a growth in turnover from zero in 1994 to a group turnover of about £100 million today, and recognition as one of Britain’s main production groups. The group produces programmes for networks across the world, with offices in Cardiff, Carmarthen, London and LA. He employs over 500 staff, 260 of them full-time in Wales.

Mr Davies appreciates that a number of his employees have been educated in Wales, including at UWTSD, and that the company can continue to offer key opportunities to promote young creative talents, and do so in Welsh and bilingually.

He has extensive experience of the business world, especially in the field of buying and merging on the stock market, and in the world of private equities.

Upon receiving his Fellowship, Mr Davies said: Thank you for this honour. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has a long-standing and proud association with the creative industries in Wales.

“It is wonderful to be here and to have the opportunity to congratulate so many new graduates who will be leaving with their certificates, each one of us being able to claim an association with the honourable name of the University of Wales on one hand, and Trinity Saint David on the other. I wish all the students starting on their new paths the very best of luck. Enjoy the journey.”
