Minister Puts Family and Community at the Heart of Education

12.06.2015

The Wales Centre for Equity in Education (WCEE) and Investors in Families are hosting a conference this month which underlines the critical importance of engaging families and communities in education from age three to eighteen.

The conference takes place at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff on Tuesday 16th June. It will bring together the research community, school leaders, policy makers, voluntary organisations and other leaders in the field of family and community engagement from across Wales.

Huw Lewis AM, Minister for Education and Skills, will launch the Welsh Government guidance for schools on family and community engagement. The guidance comes as a result of recommendations put forward in ‘Re-writing the Future’, the Welsh Government strategy for addressing the impact of poverty on education – a document which has family and community engagement as one of its key priorities.

The event will be chaired by Chris Waterman, Executive Director of Investors in Families. Speakers include Professor David Egan, WCEE Director, and Alan Dyson, Professor of Education at Manchester University.

Professor Egan said: “Increasingly we know that we cannot achieve better educational outcomes for children in Wales if we rely solely on our schools. The families and communities in which children live are a far greater influence upon them than their teachers and their schools. We, therefore, need to get our families and communities much more engaged with the education of their children and the schools they attend. This is particularly true in our most disadvantaged communities. This conference will bring together all involved in this movement for change in Wales, to hear about and share effective practice and to build networks.”

Key contributors will come from innovative schools and communities, with a range of workshop sessions including: restorative approaches, school and community partnerships, the role of family engagement workers, effective parental engagement, and time-banking.
