‘Pizza with a Pro’ has been running successfully on the UWTSD Swansea campus for nearly a year and Global Entrepreneurship Week was an ideal time to introduce the initiative to students in Carmarthen.

‘Pizza with a Pro’ is a networking event where an entrepreneur is invited to talk to students about their own experiences in the hope that it will motivate them to start their own businesses or think more entrepreneurially about their skills.  The aim is to provide a friendly and relaxed environment, over a freshly baked pizza, in order to encourage creative thinking and the development of that big idea.

The first professional to kick off ‘Pizza with a Pro’ in Carmarthen was Mark Llewelyn Evans. Mark, a Carmarthen born and bred opera singer, is known as the ‘The Baritone.  He has performed all over the world including alongside Katherine Jenkins at the Wales Millennium Stadium and David Blaine in Florida. He is also a role model for Big Ideas Wales.

In addition to sharing his own inspirational story, he also shared some valuable presentation skills with the students drawing on his skills as a professional performer. He showed them how to be themselves and present with honesty, humour and confidence.

Ross Weaver, a third year Brand and Advertising student, said “It was such a motivating evening. Mark showed us how important those first impressions are and how we really need to engage our audience. We only get that one chance to impress – I took onboard everything he said. UWTSD is great at complementing studies with talks such as these – it will certainly add to my employability when I graduate”.

Amanda Hughes one of the UWTSD Enterprise Officers who helped to organise the evening said, “Mark really inspired the students this evening. He told them to think big and to make what they say and do count. I think we all left the session feeling inspired. ‘Pizza with a Pro’ has always been a popular evening – it’s an informal way to meet successful entrepreneurs – plus the pizza always goes down well!”
