Postgraduate Subtitling Course at UWTSD

04.08.2015

A new Subtitling course will begin at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David from September 2015. The course will be offered at the Lampeter campus with work experience in professional work placements. The course is being coordinated by Gwen Davies. The students will receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Subtitling after completing the course.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Subtitling is suitable for:

  • Professional translators who want to develop their own skills in order to increase their services and expand their market
  • Graduates who intend to pursue a career in the field.
  • Professional Subtitlers who wish to gain a recognized qualification in the field and follow Continuing Development Programme.

The Course duration is 1 Year, over three semesters and the price is £1,310.

Gwen Davies said: "The course is a natural development for individuals who have done some translating and wish to develop their personal skills, or individuals looking to develop a career in this field. The Certificate was designed in collaboration with professional broadcasters and subtitling companies. The external partners contribute greatly towards the qualification, by educating and offering placements for work experiences. This is a qualification which combines good practices, and experiences in the work with sessions that are academic but practical."

Students can expect to learn a variety of skills necessary for the field such as the speed of speech, sharing subtitles, use of vocal commands and rhythm. The course will focus on practical workshops in a professional atmosphere in order for students to understand the requirements of subtitling. The programme combines theory and practice by offering a specialized dual stream, and it gives students the opportunity to take advantage of professional work placements in suitable companies.
