UWTSD staff mentors winning team in the Young Business Dragons competition

18.12.2015

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) are proud to have sponsored The Young Business Dragons competition that took place at the Marriott Hotel in Swansea this week.

The Young Business Dragons competition aims to build stronger links between education and business and provide students with the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills.

The Grand Final saw 5 teams of Year 9 and 10 pupils from local schools gather at the Marriott Hotel to compete for some fantastic prizes, including £1000 for the winning school; £50 for each member of the team and hospitality tickets for a Swansea City football match and the forthcoming Wales v France rugby international.

The winning team, ‘Team Cash’ were a group of schoolgirls from Gowerton who were mentored by UWTSD’s Bronwen Williams who is part of the Public Service Team within the Swansea Business School.

‘Team Cash’ developed the winning idea of a greetings card with a pouch attached inside to hold money or a gift card, an alternative to putting another envelope or loose cash inside the card. The pouch design is linked to the theme of the card, a football themed card has a goal with a net as the pouch and the Christmas card had a stocking for a pouch.

UWTSD’s Bronwen Williams said: The girls have worked so hard to develop the idea and get it market ready. Their product stood out from the crowd because the card was printed, the pouches were made, and they put them together in packaging, with stickers that included the logo and the name to identify themselves as cash cards. We produced enough stock for the girls to go to a Christmas market to sell the cards, which they did and actually sold all of their initial stock. This meant that they could show the judges that not only had they developed their idea to a ‘market ready’ state, they had actually tested the market place and found that their product sold.

“We are so pleased to have won, and to top it off CK's have given us a genuine order. So I will be working with the girls to get the product ready for a launch on the shelf for Easter. This has been a fantastic experience for the team and they are now a 'real' business. I am so proud of them.

“We would like to thank all of the people who have helped in making the cards ready to sell, from the design, to the printing, to the textiles; we really appreciate all the support.”

Team Cash were helped by third year Graphic Design students from UWTSD to put their designs together helped to design the logo. UWTSD’s print room printed the final designs.

Welsh Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Heritage, Ken Skates said: "Innovation is one of our key drivers for economic growth and job creation and we must give young people the opportunity to try new ways of doing things, identify great ideas and put them into practice. This competition will enable these young pupils to experience the exhilaration of business first hand and apply their skills to a real business challenge.”

As well as co-sponsoring this event, an exciting partnership between UWTSD and Marriott Hotels will see the first group of students beginning the brand new BA International Hotel Management programme in January 2016. The course is the result of a close partnership between the UWTSD and Marriott Hotels, widely recognised as one of the world’s leading hotel brands. This unique collaboration combines vocational training at the Marriott Hotel with academic study on campus at UWTSD.
