UWTSD students exhibit work at the National Botanic Garden of Wales

21.12.2015

Surface Pattern Design students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Swansea College of Art are exhibiting their work at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

The exhibition, called HELD, is a collection of work by Surface Pattern Design students and is curated by Freshwest. It is on display between 1/12/15 and 27/1/16.

Freshwest are a design duo, Marcus Beck and Simon Macro, who are renowned for their conceptual design pieces, and being unconstrained by material and discipline. They asked the Surface Pattern Design students to design and make an object that can hold or display one flower.

After a lecture to the students where Freshwest instilled their ethos of designing without designing, and discovery through play, they kick started the project with the promise of a summer placement to the most creative, outside the box response to the brief.

Georgia McKie, UWTSD Surface Pattern Design Programme Director said: “The students were initially flummoxed by the openness of the task, but have risen to the challenge and impressed Freshwest at the midway selection point.  The exhibition celebrates a multifarious collection of designs; an exciting pairing of the material and pattern that characterises the Surface Pattern students with the function and questioning of the Freshwest design ethos.”

Freshwest chose almost thirty finished objects to be included in HELD and will offer an internship next summer to the student that produces the object that they feel expresses the most creative response to the brief.

The BA Surface Pattern programme offers students an exciting opportunity to study in a thriving Faculty of Art and Design. It is designed to meet the demands of both students and employers by providing an expansive approach to the study and practice of Surface Pattern Design.
