UWTSD students hold graduate exhibition at Swansea’s newest brewery

01.05.2015

Third year students on the BA Hons Advertising and Brand Design Course at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea are making the final preparations for their final degree exhibition – ‘Tapped’ - which will be held at Boss Brewing Company, Llansamlet.

The relationship with the craft brewery came about after the Sarah John and Roy Allkin from Boss Brewing approached the University, wanting to work with the students to create a brand for the new company.

Having completed the branding exercise – which included the naming of the company – the micro-brewery with big ideas offered their premises as a location for the students’ graduate show. Third year student Conor Stephens came up with the concept behind their final logo.

Final year student, Dominic Wint is the Creative Director for the exhibition and has loved every minute of preparing for the course’s final show.

“During the same time as we were working on branding project with Boss Brewing, we had to come up with themes for our graduate exhibition. We were looking for somewhere a little different and thought of using the brewery as the venue.

“It’s an ideal exhibition venue,” continues Dominic. “It’s a cool, open space and it helps us push the boundaries. We then decided on a brewery theme and will be displaying our work for instance on wooden pallets.”

The relationship with Boss Brewing Company has been of great benefit to both the students and the company.

“I think that the Course is well suited to help 'start-ups' take their business or products to market,” says Angela Williams, programme director of the BA Hons Advertising and Brand Design course.

“The combination of marketing, advertising and design skills is sought after in the business world,” adds Angela. “Collaborative projects with companies such as Boss Brewing Company offer invaluable skills and experience to both parties and give students greater confidence when searching for work after graduating.”

Dominic Wint adds how the course – and indeed his work on the ‘Tapped’ exhibition – has taught him a wide range of skills.

“We’ve had to fundraise for the exhibition as well as thinking about the guest list, the invitations, the advertising and promotion,” he continues. “It’s been a fantastic experience and I’m really looking forward to seeing our work exhibited in such an exciting space.”

Sarah John from Boss Brewing said:

“As a start-up business, we did not have the budget to hire a creative agency, so to have access to this impressive pool of talent was fantastic. Community is really important to us here at Boss Brewing, so to be able to say that we developed our brand with the help of a group of enthusiastic, talented and creative local students rather than a large London agency is brilliant.”

‘Tapped’ will be held at Boss Brewing in Llansamlet. A private view will be held at 6pm on Friday, May 1st with the exhibition open to the public from 12pm – 5pm on May 2nd – 4th.
