Accademia della crusca. Vocabulario
(Venice: I.Turrini, 1680)
Samuel Johnson was only one of the great lexicographers to benefit from the authority and methodology of this advanced Italian dictionary, the Vocabulario, Co-ordinated by the erudite Leonardo Salviati, the Accademia della Crusca sought to purify the Italian literary; language from a welter of competing dialects. That of Tuscany, embodied in the literary labours of Petrarch and Boccaccio, became their obvious choice, and remains today the literary norm.
