Euripides The Plays...translated into rhyming verse by Gilbert Murray...with wood engravings from the Greek vase paintings.
(The Gregynog Press, 1931)
The Gregynog Press was certainly one of the major private presses of the 1920s and 1930s. Under the regime of Maynard and Bray it achieved the highest standards of typographical and illustrative work. The folio Euripides is one of its most ambitious undertakings, handsomely set in Bembo and Firbank italic with fine wide margins on the specially commissioned Batchelor’s hand-made paper.
The private press movement is virtually the swan song of the age of printing by relief metal types which originated in Mainz in the 1450s with Gutenberg and Schoeffer.
