Jacques Francois Blondel
Jacques Francois Blondel. Description des festes données par la ville de Paris. Paris, 1740.
This magnificent fête book commemorates the public festival staged by the city of Paris on August 29-30, 1739 to celebrate the marriage of Princess Louise Elizabeth of France (1727-59) to Don Philip, Duke of Parma (1720-65), son of Spain's Philip V. The fête was planned and directed by the architect and artist Giovanni Servadoni (1695-1766), one of the leading festival designers of his age - he designed the fireworks display for which Handel composed his well-known Music for the Royal Fireworks. The author of the present work, Jacques-Francois Blondel (1705-1774), was the most significant French architectural educator of the eighteenth century.
