Restif de La Bretonne
Restif de La Bretonne. Monument du costume physique et moral de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Neuwied sur le Rhin, 1789.
Society under Louis XVI was persuaded that it had brought human existence to an unprecedented level of polish and refinement. The Monument du Costume illustrates the manners and mores of this aristocratic Ancien Régime in a series of 26 narrative illustrations engraved over roughly a seven-year period by the French printmaker Jean-Michel Moreau le Jeune (1741-1814). The work is widely regarded as a triumph of eighteenth century publishing.
