George Stubbs (1724-1806) was the son of a currier and leather seller with little formal training but much natural talent. He possessed great anatomical knowledge which combined with his skill in portraiture made him one of the truly great painter-scientists. To complete this work Stubbs rented a farmhouse in 1756 in which scaffolding was erected to hold horse cadavers which he dissected and drew. It took 18 months to complete the drawings, which he also etched. In his time the book was a sensation and was well regarded by the European scientific community. For over a century both scientists and artists used Anatomy of Horses as a textbook.
