Artist John Martin (1789-1854) achieved enormous commercial success and critical acclaim with this work, commissioned by London based American publisher Septimus Prowett. The apocalyptic romanticism of the illustrations was partly inspired by the engravings of Piranesi and published volumes of Oriental views. This copy is a proof edition, of which only fifty were printed.
