Apparitions at Carmarthen
The Witches Sabbat illustrated by Jean Bernard Picart. (Picart, 1733)
The RBLA contains dozens of works that deal with witchcraft and demonology, including accounts of events that happened in Wales. We began this exhibition in Carmarthen, and that’s where we will end it, with a tract from the 1680s that gives an account of a spectral incident in the town in the 1680s.
The true and wonderful relation of the dreadful fighting and groans that were heard and seen in the ayr, on the fifteenth of this instant January, in Carmarthen, in South-Wales, by Mr. Henry Lewys, and his whole family; and by many hundreds more the night following. (Anonymous, 1681)
