Architecture, Computing & Engineering

Our research is cross-disciplinary, and covers a broad scope of work in Automotive Engineering, Logistics & Manufacturing Engineering, Applied Computing.

Our approach is centred on solving industry-led near-to-market problems that are relevant to regional companies often require innovative design solutions and an environmental management system target.

The work is focussed on the interaction of low energy photons with human tissue. Much of the work has been carried out through collaborative research projects with locally-based international companies in two areas of research.

  • Industrial standard multiphysics applications for stress and fatigue predictions
  • Modelling codes for simulating light-tissue interaction.

The university is the lead academic partner in the NDT Validation Centre at ECM2 Port Talbot operated by TWI. Funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and from the EPSRC has facilitated the acquisition of state of the art equipment and capacity, including:

  • Ultrasonics
  • Infrared thermography,
  • Computerised photoelastic stress measurement
  • Scanning laser Doppler vibrometry.

In addition to these resources, the university is well equipped with conventional optical microscopy and high speed digital video facilities and is a partner in the pan-Wales ASTUTE  (Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies ) programme delivering direct benefits to business.

This is a major strength of the Faculty of Architecture, Computing & Engineering. Work is based in two research interdisciplinary institutes, both which have excellent knowledge transfer infrastructures, which has had a transformational effect on the community, producing over 168 bespoke design solutions for the disabled.
