Abilities in Sinology

  • All applicants are required to have the ability of reading, writing and comprehending classical Chinese.
  • All applicants are required to have basic knowledge of Philology, be familiar with Introduction to Philology 《文字學概說》 and The Origin of Chinese Characters說文解字注》 as well as the ability to apply it to the study of classic texts.
  • All applicants are required to be able to recite fluently The Roots of Initiation Education 《聖學根之根》, and be able to fully interpret two excerpts from it.
  • All applicants are required to be able to recite and write in classical Chinese the selected core classic texts of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism below.

Required Qualifications

An applicant can be considered eligible to apply for the following certificate/degree programmes provided he/she holds one of the following qualifications prior to commencement:

Foundation (Pre-BA)

  • Meets the specific entry requirements of the programme (Please see Abilities in Sinology above)
  • A non-graduate qualification which meets the appropriate standard for the purpose of foundation admission is desirable

BA

  • Meets the specific entry requirements of the programme (Please see Abilities in Sinology above)
  • A non-graduate qualification which meets the appropriate standard for the purpose of undergraduate admission
  • Or an initial degree from an approved degree awarding body

MA

  • Meets the specific entry requirements of the programme (Please see Abilities in Sinology above)
  • An initial degree from an approved degree awarding body


English Requirements

All International applicants are required to meet the language requirements. For UKVI (UK Visa and Immigration) an academic IELTS English Language score of 6.0 (BA, MA) and 4.0 (Pre-BA) overall is required, with no less than 5.5 (BA, MA) and 3.5 (Pre-BA) in all four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Please note that the University will only accept IELTS certificates from UKVI-approved test centres. View a list of approved centres ››

Note: Previous study in the medium of English is acceptable if you have already been awarded an academic qualification equivalent to a UK BA degree or above which was taught in what UKVI describes as a "majority English speaking country". However, you must now include an original document from UK NARIC, which assesses the equivalency of the qualification to a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in the UK. Find out more about NARIC ››

Recommendation Letters

All applicants are required to submit two recommendation letters written in both Chinese and English.

  • For BA and Foundation (Pre-BA) applicants, we expect two letters from accomplished sinologists
  • For MA applicants, we expect one letter from a lecturer of the university where you studied; and the other from an accomplished sinologist

Application Form and Submission

All applicants are required to complete an application form and submit related documents. Please submit the online application form in English. All application forms should be submitted to: admissions@uwtsd.ac.uk The Deadline for receipt of the application form is 31 March 2019. Please note: all university staff will be away for the Easter holiday between end of March and early April. Applicants are advised to submit their applications as early as possible.

Following submission of the application form and relevant supporting information, the Academy will invite those who pass the pre-screening criteria for a further interview (this may be in person or via the Internet). Details concerning further guidance and arrangements for the interview will be provided in advance of the interview.

Please complete the form in English

All applications should be accompanied by the following documents (please note that all the specified documents that are not in English or Welsh must include a certified English translation that can be independently verified by UKVI). All the documents must be in English and where necessary an independent translating service can be used. Documents should be electronically submitted via the admissions@uwtsd.ac.uk email address on or before 31 March 2019.

  1. A completed application form signed by the applicant both in Chinese and English.
  2. A certified copy of your university degree certificate or proof of accredited examination of knowledge equivalent to a university degree in English. If possible an academic transcript of undergraduate courses taken.
  3. A valid IELTS certificate from a UKVI-approved test centre confirming the required minimum overall score and scores in all four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or its equivalent or proof of permanent residency / citizenship of an English speaking country.
  4. A certified copy of personal identification (ID and Passport).
  5. Appropriate documentation affirming financial position and requirements.
  6. Two recommendation letters truthfully issued by the recommenders and can be verified by the University.
  7. A biographical essay of no more than 800 characters written in classical Chinese to illustrate one’s knowledge and skills of classical Chinese. (This is to be submitted together with the signed application form)
  • All applications submitted will be reviewed in line with stated requirements for entry to the appropriate programme of study within the Academy of Sinology. This pre-screening stage will confirm authenticity of documents and that all the essential criteria have been met.  Those passing the pre-screening process will be called for interview via email.
  • All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the University Registry Admissions. Those who are accepted by the Academy will receive a notice together with further visa and enrolment related information.
  • International students may be eligible for grants and scholarships

  • In addition, for those who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and life-long commitment to practising and promoting Sinology, the Foundation will consider offering scholarship provided that they pass the required assessments.
