Visual Communication

Visual Communication is a vibrant and friendly department that encourages its students to pursue confident and innovative futures in a range of creative professions.

The school has an excellent reputation in preparing students for the creative and communication industries. We focus upon developing individual creativity, supported by a wide variety of specialist skill-based workshops in order communicate striking and searching messages about the world we live in.

There are six courses in Visual Communication: BA Graphic Design, BA Illustration and BA Advertising and Brand Design. MDes Graphic Design, MDes Illustration, and MDes Advertising and Brand Design. Whilst each course focuses upon clearly defined areas of study as set out below, all courses encourage traditional, new and innovative ways of challenging the wider subject area of visual communication.

In-departmental resources include a large printmaking facility with letterpresses, screen-printing, relief-printing and etching. There are also six lively practice-based studios as well as three Apple Mac suites equipped with large format printing and laser cutting facilities.

Graphic Design is integral to our visual culture and professional graphic designers play a key role as prime cultural producers. The graphic designer creates, manipulates and gives visual form to words and imagery in order to inform, persuade, delight - and occasionally disturb.

The programme provides you with a broad education in graphic design and, with an inbuilt degree of flexibility, it enables you to pursue individual interests whether in the fields of corporate graphics and brand identity, publishing, general design for print, packaging or interactive screen-based design.

Illustration is all about image-making and effective communication. As a dynamic and changing discipline, it not only explores drawing and painting through structured workshops, but pursues illustration of many other kinds, through typography, collage, print-making, ceramics, motion, as well as mixed and digital media.

Utilising both traditional, digital and experimental materials and processes, students determine their own eventual working practices. As well as annual study trips to Europe, a full programme of visiting professionals also ensures that strong links with industry and the commercial world are maintained.

Advertising and Brand Design is a bit Fine Art, a bit Graphic Design and a bit Business - all tied up with the latest technologies. People in advertising have an immense creative ability and a real desire to make their mark. Above all they are ideas people, everyday is an exciting challenge to find something new and innovative. We liaise with businesses and look at real problems to solve from the very outset. Our ‘hands on’ projects include design for branding, creative art direction (working with photographers and video students amongst others), ‘pitching’ your concepts and ideas, marketing strategies and leading innovative new campaigns. This is what we are about.
