Tales with Tails project

Abstract 

This paper reports on a small scale, mixed methods research project which explores a school-based initiative involving children reading to dogs. The presentation explores whether involvement in the initiative has had an impact on individual pupil’s reading levels (measured by standardised tests) and well-being – specifically confidence, metacognition and views of themselves as learners. It discusses the experience of the dog’s handlers – who are adult volunteers, and typically retired. I was interested to see whether involvement in the project improves their sense of wellbeing.
