Young Enterprise is a national charity committed to motivating young people across the UK to succeed in the evolving world of work. With a mission to empower young people to discover, develop, and celebrate their skills and potential, Young Enterprise focuses on reducing youth unemployment and bridging the skills gap faced by many young individuals today.

Rebecca Jones, Enterprise Development Manager at UWTSD was part of the judging panel for the event. She said:

“Enterprise is such a core skill these days and to see the young people embracing innovation and the practical side of running a business was a joy.”

Five schools from mid Wales, including Ysgol Bro Pedr, Ysgol Penweddig, Ysgol Penglais, Newtown High School - John Beddoes Campus, and Queen Elizabeth High School, participated in the event. Each school showcased unique enterprise ideas and delivered presentations to the judging panel.

The winners of the Young Enterprise Award were Ysgol Penweddig with their business idea named ‘Llanw,’ a cookbook focused on utilising leftovers effectively. Newtown High School - John Beddoes Campus emerged as the runners-up with their business idea ‘Wag tags,’ offering creative pet name tags.

Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Provost of the Lampeter Campus said:

“It’s a pleasure to support events like the Young Enterprise Award Ceremony that highlight the innovative spirit and potential of our young people. Seeing these budding entrepreneurs in action reaffirms our commitment to nurturing talent and fostering entrepreneurial skills on our campus.”

Maggie Ayre, Educational Partnerships Regional Manager for South West England and South and Mid Wales at Young Enterprise also commended the event, emphasising the positive impact of such initiatives on young people’s futures.

“Every young person deserves the opportunity to learn essential skills and develop an enterprising mindset. Events like the Young Enterprise Showcase play a crucial role in making this vision a reality.  I am delighted that five schools from Mid-Wales were represented at the 2024 event and look forward to working with more schools, organisations and young people in Mid-Wales in the years to come.”

The Enterprise Team at UWTSD’s Lampeter Campus looks forward to continuing its support for initiatives that empower young people, students and alumni and contribute to building a successful and sustainable future for all.
