Nestled within the Institute of Education and Humanities and the Global Humanity for Peace (GHfP) Institute, this groundbreaking initiative represents a beacon of hope and progress in the realm of global peace education.

Unlike traditional approaches that solely emphasise the absence or mitigation of conflict and violence, the MA Peace Studies offers a refreshing perspective. It is one of the few master-level programmes in the English-speaking world dedicated to exploring peace in its holistic and positive dimensions. This innovative curriculum delves into the qualities of peacefulness, social justice, holistic well-being, good governance, and ecological integrity, enriching students’ understanding of peace as a multifaceted and dynamic concept.

“We are thrilled to introduce the MA Peace Studies programme, which fills a critical gap in higher education by prioritising positive conceptions of peace,” said GHfP Institute Director, Prof Scherto Gill. “In an era marked by global challenges, it is imperative to cultivate a new generation of leaders and scholars who can envision and enact transformative pathways to peace.”

Key highlights of the MA Peace Studies programme include its interdisciplinary approach, which fosters a nuanced understanding of peace within diverse contexts. Students will explore the principles and values underlying positive peace while critically examining policies, institutional practices, and structural conditions that contribute to peace, well-being, and social justice.

Furthermore, UWTSD is proud to offer substantial private sponsorship for students interested in pursuing this transformative programme. With up to 50% matching funds available, the university is committed to making peace education accessible to aspiring scholars and practitioners.

“We invite graduate researchers and practitioners from all sectors and backgrounds to join us on this journey towards a more peaceful and just world,” remarked Dr Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, Lecturer in Peace Studies at the GHfP Institute and UWTSD’s Institute for Education and Humanities. “Together, we can cultivate the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to address the complexities of contemporary peacebuilding. Whether you are a graduate researcher, practitioner, leader, or policymaker, the MA Peace Studies programme at UWTSD offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of peace and contribute to global efforts for positive change.”

The MA Peace Studies is the inaugural academic offering of the Global Humanity for Peace (GHfP) Institute, sanctioned by UNESCO to implement the UNESCO Collective Healing Initiative. Through research, teaching, and community engagement, the GHfP Institute aims to advance positive conceptions of peace, well-being, and social justice, while nurturing future leaders committed to healing and transformation.
