A full programme of visiting professionals ensures that strong links with industry and the commercial world are maintained. Visiting speakers have included Laura Carlin, Olivier Kugler, Jonny Hannah, Bright Illustration Agency, Nicola Davies and Marcelle Hanselaar. Studio and gallery visits, and optional annual study trips to destinations such as the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, New York, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Madrid, Paris and Budapest.
Opportunities to work on live, commercial projects: An external brief introduced to second and third-year students by children’s book author, Nicola Davies, helped launch third-year student Abbie Cameron’s freelance career. She was chosen to illustrate Nicola’s book, The Word Bird. Within the first year of leaving university Abbie had already illustrated three published picture books.
In addition to our Graduate Exhibition here in Swansea, selected students also exhibit at New Designers in London. This provides a springboard for students’ careers and is visited by thousands of industry professionals looking for fresh, new talent:
Lego spotted Adam Corbally’s character designs at New Designers. He is now working for them in Denmark:
“Since graduating, I have been working as a Graphic Artist at LEGO in Denmark. I have worked on a range of products that have been based on reference from comic books, films and television shows, such as The Lone Ranger, Back to the Future, Avengers Assemble Television series, and Ghostbusters. As well as this, I have also worked on original characters for The LEGO Movie and its related LEGO products.”
We also host the World Illustration Awards, organised by The Association of Illustrators (The AOI), in partnership with the Directory of Illustration.
