What you will learn

Course Overview

This course is for students wishing to excel in a career in Business and Management with a specific focus on human resource. The programme shares a common first year, during which you take a range of compulsory modules covering a number of business disciplines, providing a broad understanding of business and management. This allows you, as the student, to gain a good understanding of the principles across a range of subject areas whilst also providing the opportunity to gain further insight into human resource management and leadership.

The programme has been developed in conjunction with employers and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) who are the leading industry body, to ensure the relevant employability and professional skills are developed alongside the academic rigour of a degree programme.

The Business School has long established relationships with local and regional businesses to deliver a programme of integrated extracurricular activities. This provides our students with a range of contacts, opportunities and experiences that form part of the learning experience, but also allows students to develop their knowledge, skills and practical capabilities necessary for the transition into employment.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but you can expect a range of assessments including, coursework, practical work and exams. Assessments combine academic rigor with authentic “real-world” tasks that demonstrate a students ability to meaningfully apply their knowledge and skills.

Other equivalent qualifications are accepted and the admissions panel will consider each application on an individual basis.  Please note also that our offers are not based solely on your academic achievements; we take into account your full range of skills, experience and attainments when considering your application.

The degree welcomes applicants who have previously studied business for a natural progression. Those who have studied other subject areas will transfer well. Those with work experience, but few formal qualifications, may also join the programme. A-Level and Edexcel awards, as well as a range of other certificates at this level from UK, EU and International bodies are respected.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

Career Opportunities

Our business degrees provide students with a broad range of skills that are sought after by a range of employers. Due to the flexible and broad nature of the programme graduates will be equipped to enter a range of industries and sectors including not of profit, public and private sectors. In 2015/16 98% of graduates from the Business School were in employment and/or further study after six months.

The Business School offers students dedicate placement support with industry-specific advice being offered by discipline experts. Students will have the opportunity to undertake placements/internships as part of their degree programme and/or in addition to the taught modules. Opportunities to join the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development continuous professional development (CPD) programme is also possible. 

Additional Costs

Extra costs to be borne by the student

As an institution, we seek to continually enhance the student experience and as a result additional costs may be incurred by the student on activities that will add value to their education. Where possible these costs will be kept to a minimum with additional activities being optional.

Field trips and placement costs

Field trips will be available for students, which are optional. Costs for UK and International trips will be provided at the beginning of the academic year. 

Students undertaking placements abroad will incur travel, living and possibly accommodation costs. The amount will depend upon location and current state of the UK pound. For students undertaking placements in the USA, additional visa costs will apply.

Students will be expected to pay four weeks prior to field trips taking place. Travel and visa costs for overseas placements, three months before departure.
