University Mental Health Day 2022

Good mental health is essential to your wellbeing, and as a student, there is a lot of support available to you.
This years University Mental Health Day is on Thursday 3rd of March 2022. To mark this date, we have put together a list of these resources, organisations and charities you can go to for support.
University Mental Health Day brings together the university community to make mental health a university-wide priority and create ongoing year round change to the future of student mental health.
No student should ever feel alone with their mental health.
This article will discuss mental health and crisis services. If you are affected by any of these issues or require urgent help, please contact Samaritans for free by calling 116 123, or phone the emergency services on 999.
Student Wellbeing Support
Operated by Student Minds – is here to help you with expert support and wellbeing advice. Whether you’re stressed about your studies, relationships, or if you have concerns about university life, you don’t have to struggle on your own. There are resources, self-help materials, and access every day to phone, email, web-chat and text support. If you are in need of support, text ‘STUDENT’ to 85358 to start a conversation, 24 hours a day.

UWTSD offers all students free access to the 24/7 online supportive service. An anonymous space that students can visit when feeling down, need support or just need to talk.
What does it offer?
You can learn practical skills to help you feel better and tackle a variety of issues.
- Use peer networks to discuss your issues with people experiencing similar problems
- Use self-assessment tools to monitor your progress
- Join group courses and discussion on common issues like negative thinking and stress

- Student Assistance Programme
Offering expert advice and compassionate guidance 24/7 for issues such as legal, financial, medical or life matters. Some of the support offered by the Student Assistance Programme can help you with: stress and anxiety, debt, education pressures, lifestyle addictions, relationships. The Student Assistance Programme also provides other benefits to UWTSD students including the ‘My Healthy Advantage’ app, a wellbeing portal. To access the app, register using student email address, with the unique code: MHA154656

Mental Health & Wellbeing Services
NHS Direct: 111 – professional health advice 24/7, for guidance on accessing appropriate health services or visit the NHS website.

Birmingham Healthy Minds - a free programme run by the NHS to support people with depression and anxiety.
University Counselling Service
If you're feeling stressed, anxious, or low, and would like 1:1 support in a confidential space, the university professional counsellors are here to support you. If you would like to book an appointment with one of the counsellors, please visit the online booking system.
University Disability Service
Mental health conditions may include: depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder), eating disorders, personality disorders, self-harm, schizophrenia
We can support you with:
- Confidential advice and guidance
- Liaison with university lecturers and professional staff
- Signposting to external resources
- Implementation of adjustments where applicable (e.g., extra time for assessments/comfort breaks)
- Student Finance Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) guidance

Student Finance Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
Did you know that if you have a long-term mental health diagnosis you could be eligible for extra support through Student Finance Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)?
DSA is support to cover the study-related costs you may have because of a disability, dependant on individual requirements.
You can apply and send proof of your eligibility for DSA online through your Student Finance account or send completed DSA application forms to Student Finance in the post. DSA forms can be found on gov.uk.
