Returning to education for UWTSD Birmingham CertHE Health and Social Care graduate Cheryl Codner has not been without its challenges, but the 46-year-old is now a step closer to her dream career of becoming a social worker.

Cheryl decided to enroll after receiving a letter through her door about courses at UWTSD during lockdown.

She said: “I decided to enquire about the Health and Social care Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). I was particularly interested in this area as I have worked in the caring field for the last 25 years. Currently I am employed by the NHS as a healthcare assistant. I already have level 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care and after completing the application, I was invited for an interview. When I received confirmation of being successful and securing a place at university, I was so overwhelmed.”

Cheryl said her career goal is to become a support/social worker, specialising in mental health.

“The reason I am passionate about this area is because so many people are struggling with mental health issues, also there is a shortage of staff to accommodate the current demand for services within this field of work,” she said.

Cheryl said despite the challenges she encountered, which included being diagnosed with dyslexia last year, she was determination to continue learning.

“During my learning journey some of my lessons were conducted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” she added. “Technology has never been an easy platform for me. This was one of my challenges. However, I overcame them by seeking help from lecturers and my fellow students. Since doing this course, I have learned so much. I am far more confident than I used to be. I can honestly say it is one of my biggest achievements using Microsoft software to complete my assignments.

“It has not been easy, but I am living proof that anything can be achieved if we put our mind to it. Life is about self-belief and not giving up on your goals.”

Cheryl said she was proud to be graduating and that her learning journey would continue.

“I have also completed level 5 and recently started my level 6 in Health and Social Care. This term is slightly different because my lessons are now on campus. I was worried about entering a classroom after being out of education for a while. Finally, I got to meet my colleagues in person. The whole experience has proven to be beneficial. Staff are welcoming, and always available to answer any questions, give advice and reassurance. I would recommend this course to others. I have found it highly informative and has contributed to positive changes in my life. I am now looking forward to what the future holds.”
