Understanding the Craft of Bricklaying

This short course offers an overview of the basic skills required when laying bricks, the skill required soon becomes apparent when you pick up a trowel. The four half-day course is set in the workshop and there will also be several theoretical sessions to reflect on best practice and allow questions and feedback.

Who should attend
This course is suitable for building contractors who wish to upskill their workforce and those involved in construction activities who have little or no previous bricklaying experience but require basic bricklaying skills.

Course Content

On successful completion of the course you will have an appreciation of:

  • How to set out bricklaying projects
  • How to work with different bonds including Stretcher, Flemish and English.
  • How part bricks are used such as half and quarter bats, closures and headers for example.
  • Using a gauge rod to match existing structures.
  • How to use lines, pins and levels.
  • How to build walls and pillars.
  • How to mix mortar.
  • How to build with block work.
  • How to use wall ties, wall plates and damp proof courses.
  • How to install lintels
  • How to point and dress a wall

A certificate of attendance is issued by Coleg Cambria.
