The International Year 1 (IY1), delivered at UWTSD’s Swansea campus is designed to allow admission to certain UWTSD undergraduate programmes for students who do not quite meet the academic admissions requirements.

The programme is designed to provide an intensive mixture of your first year undergraduate modules together with additional modules and tutorial support in Study Skills and English for Academic Skills.

The International Year 1 is the first year of a three year degree at the end of which if successful, you will receive a UWTSD Bachelor’s degree.

  • A full-time academic programme in Business or Psychology which is comparable to studying the first year of a UWTSD degree programme

  • Specifically designed for international students who show academic promise but who fall just short of the University’s academic admissions requirements for direct entry to Year 1 of a specified undergraduate degree.

Successful completion leads to entry to Year 2 of:

  • English for Academic Purposes (2 semesters)
  • Academic Study Skills for Students
  • Research Methods I
  • Developmental and Social Psychology
  • Cognition and Emotion
  • Understanding the Self
  • Psychology Lab

  • Introduction to the Digital Workplace

Key Features

  • Develop the required academic and technical English language skills for degree study
  • Successful completion guarantees direct entry to the second year of a relevant degree programme at UWTSD

A large part of the course is devoted to academic subjects that relate directly to your proposed degree programme. All students take Academic English Language and Study Skills modules within the context of your academic discipline and will receive additional tutorial support if required.

Teaching is delivered through a range of methods including lectures, seminars and academic tutorials. The programmes have also been designed to develop the key transferable skills needed for successful undergraduate study.

Students are assessed by a combination of exams, tests and coursework assignments which might include essays, presentations, problem solving exercises, reports and projects.

Modules in academic subjects and study skills are assessed at the end of each semester but English language assessment takes place predominantly at the end of the programme.

The International Year One is suitable for international students who have studied AS levels, A levels, International Baccalaureate, a recognised Foundation programme or an international equivalent.

The programme lasts for three terms or one academic year.

Entry to undergraduate year two, following successful completion of International Year One, allows students to save time and money.
