Library Catalogue Change

Library catalogue change

In February and March 2016, UWTSD Libraries will be changing the catalogue that you use to discover books, e-books and other resources and the underlying library management system that library staff use to manage your account.

We hope that these changes will result in a number of improvements to our services, including better links between the libraries at Swansea, Carmarthen, Lampeter and London.

The new library systems are being implemented through the WHELF (Wales Higher Education Libraries Forum) Shared Library Management System project.  This project is a collaboration between all Welsh higher education libraries and the National Library of Wales, who will all be moving to the same platform, Ex Libris Alma and Primo. The project won the Outstanding Library Team award at the 2015 Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards.

Update: 1st March 2016

Our new library catalogue is now live.  You can search the catalogue, and manage your library account using the links below.  When logging in, please make sure to choose your home campus, and use your IT login and password.  Swansea students should enter their "P" number with an uppercase "P".  University staff should enter their username in lower case.

Changes to our service

Most loan periods, loan allowance and fine rates will not change. We do hope to introduce several new services which we hope will be of benefit to students and staff:

Automatic renewals

We will be introducing automatic renewal for UWTSD staff and students on most standard loan, 1 week loan and teaching practice resources. If the item you have borrowed is not requested by another library user, your loan will automatically renew 2 days before the due date. This will mean that you will no longer need to call in to the library or contact us to renew your loans. The maximum length of time that you can borrow any one item, if it is not requested, will be 1 calendar year, after which it will need to be returned to the library.

If another user requests a book that you have on loan and there are no other copies available, your loan will not automatically renew and you will need to return it on or before the due date, as at present. 2 day, 1 day and 3 hour loans will not be automatically renewed.

Advanced booking

We are hoping to introduce a facility for booking short loans in advance, which will allow UWTSD staff and students to choose a suitable time to reserve 1 day and 3 hour loans up to 1 week in advance. To collect the item you have booked, you will need to call in to the library at which it is held at the start time of your booking.

Borrowing at any campus

At present we are using different library systems in Swansea, and at Carmarthen and Lampeter. This means students and staff registered at one campus and wishing to use another library have to complete a separate registration form. When we move to the new system, your UWTSD ID card and library account will be valid at all UWTSD campus libraries and there will no longer be any need to register for a separate account to use a library at a different campus. In addition, library staff will be able to manage your account at any campus, so if you regularly use multiple libraries you will be able to renew your loans at any location.

Other changes

As we will be introducing automatic renewals and advanced booking facilities, we will no longer offer an extended loan period for students with a special loan status.

Please note that automatic renewals and advanced booking will not be available to guests and external users, e.g. through the SCONUL Access or Libraries Together schemes.

Further ahead there will be many other benefits, including the ability for you to easily expand your search to view the holdings of other Welsh university libraries.

Help and support

Your Academic Liaison Librarian will be the best point of contact if you would like advice and support using the new system to find resources for your studies:
