Keeping an eye on recent journal articles is a very good way of staying up to date with a topic and can save you a lot of time when you come to researching for your assignments or dissertation.  Most e-resources will allow you to set up email alerts or RSS feeds of the contents lists of key journals in your subject area or of keyword searches you have conducted within the e-resources.  Some useful e-journal titles for health are:

We have a very powerful catalogue which searches a number of databases collectively for online e-resources.  However for in-depth searching it is best to supplement the catalogue search by searching e-resources individually.  UWTSD Online Library offers a wide range of online resources.  Below is a list of individual databases suitable for Sports, Health and Outdoor Education.

Academic Search Premier

Academic Search Premier is an excellent database - a good all rounder for most subjects.

Education Source

Education Research Complete is the most authoritative online resource for education research. It offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full-text education journals. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing.


The subject scope of MEDLINE is biomedicine and health is a bibliographic database. The majority of the publications are scholarly journals.  Coverage is generally 1946 to the present.  A growing number of MEDLINE citations contain a link to the free full text of articles in PubMed.


Updated daily, Newsbank provides access to current and archived newspaper articles from popular Welsh and UK newspapers including the Western Mail, the Times, the Financial Times, the Guardian and the Independent.  Customised searches can be created and saved for future use or configured for email alerts.

Proquest Central

Proquest Central is a comprehensive, diverse and relevant multidisciplinary research database.  It provides access to databases across all the major subject areas and is especially useful for students within the school of sport, health and oudoor education because of this.  It contains good quality resources on injuries, health and science.


PsycARTICLES is a psychology database of full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educationa Publishing Foundation, the Canaddian Psychological Association and HOgrefe Publishing Group.

 Science Direct

Science Direct is a leading full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from nearly 2,500 journals and more than 30,000 books.  It is an excellent resource for most Sports, Nutrition and Outdoor Education.  The results from Science Direct don't show up very well with a library catalogue search so it is always worth doing a separate search with this database.  It is also worth limiting to full-text.


A sport, fitness and sports medicine bibliographic database, containing more than 500,000 references, 20,000 theses and dissertations, 10,000 website addresses and links to full text articles.

Taylor & Francis

Taylor and Frances is a large leading publisher of scholarly articles.  The content spans all areas of humanities, social sciences, behavioural sciences, science, technology and medicine.  With access to many journal titles covering sports, health and outdoor education it can be a very good resource.

The internet is a very useful tool for finding information and resources but it can be very difficult and time consuming to find relevant, up-to-date and accurate information and should be used with care.

Canoe Wales

Canoe Wales is the national governing body for paddle sport in Wales. They represent the interests of the club and individual members, advocate on behalf of the interests of the sport in Wales, provide coaching and development programmes from local to international level and stage national and international competitions.

Change 4 Life

A website dedicated to improving the health of the people of Wales.  Provides advice and guidance about exercise, health and lifestyle.

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based health care.

ERIC (Education Resources Information Centre)

A searchable online digital library of education research and information.  It is largely a bibliographic database but there is also some full-text content. 

Health in Wales

This website by the NHS aims to provide information about health in Wales and health and social care services.  Includes statistics, research and other resources.


Contains references to over 3800 biomedical journals, from 1966 onwards. Covers all aspects of medicine with a worldwide focus.

National Resources Wales

Provides information about National Resources Wales, the work they do, the news, consultations, reports and vacancies.

Office for National Statistics

Provides access to government statistics for the UK.

Outdoor Recreation Network

Formerly the Countryside Recreation Network (CRN). The ORN encompasses all of the outdoors – from urban greenspace in towns and cities to remote, countryside and wilderness spaces across the British Isles.

Sport Wales

Sport Wales is the national organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and physical activity in Wales.  The website gives access to information about sports programmes, funding and publications.
