  • I thoroughly enjoyed my three years of undergraduate studies. The diversity of the course and the modules taught really gave me a layered knowledge of Education. The way it was delivered to me and my peers made studying a BA enjoyable and interesting. My university experience has given me the support, confidence and drive to continue my studies. I know it will be just as rewarding at MA level!

Education is so much more than just the study of teaching. The central position that education holds within the United Kingdom as well as globally means that more than ever we need professionals within the sector who are able to get to the heart of educational policy and practice.

This programme is an academic study of education that seeks to challenge students to question and examine the principles of education through a combination of theory and reflection on the systems of education as they exist at present, and the principles that drive them. It will allow students to focus in depth on aspects of education that are of interest to them and consider the complexity of education in an increasingly globalized world.

Throughout the programme, we will explore key questions such as:

  • How are the economy and education connected and impact upon each other?
  • What is the role of the government in relation to education?
  • How are the roles of learners and educators changing in the global marketplace?
  • What will schools and universities look like in the future?
  • How does the role of technology and the media impact upon education?
  • Who really owns the curriculum and why? What are the challenges and considerations?

Within Part 1 of the programme, there is a combination of compulsory and optional modules that will cover a broad spectrum of educational issues. In Part 2 the dissertation will allow students to explore in detail an educational issue of importance to them with the guidance of our expert staff.

Compulsory modules include:

  • The Philosophy and Practice of Social Research
  • Education: Effective Change in Leadership and Management
  • Global Citizenship in Context
  • Dissertation

Optional modules include:

  • Education, Society and Policy: Contemporary Classrooms
  • Education, Society and Policy: Beyond Compulsory Education
