Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

Introduction

MFA provides an extra layer of protection when accessing University IT Systems and ensures that your University account is more secure by protecting you and the University should your username and password be compromised.

You can choose from the below verification methods to setup your authentication. We highly recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app to simplify your experience. If you don’t have a mobile device to install the app or would prefer not to install the app on your personal device, you can choose SMS text message or phone call.

    • Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone
    • An authentication code sent by SMS text message
    • An authentication approval by an automated phone call
  • You can view or change your authentication method at any time.

    • Go to your Security Setup Info
    • Under Default Sign-in Method – click Change and then select your preferred contact method in the drop-down list
    • You can add additional methods to verify, including:

      1. Mobile Phone (an SMS text code is sent to your mobile phone)
      2. Telephone Call (An automated telephone call to verify your authentication)
    • Click Save – setup complete!
  • Q. When I replace the registered mobile device that I receive my codes or verification requests to, what do I need to do?

    A. You need to update your security info. If you follow our recommendation and use the Microsoft Authenticator app method, you’ll also need to download the app on your new mobile phone.

    • Go to your Security Setup Info
    • Under Default Sign-in Method  click Change and then select your preferred contact method in the drop-down list
    • You can add additional methods to verify, including:
      1. Personal Email (code is emailed to a personal email account)
      2. Mobile Phone (an SMS text code is sent to your mobile phone)
      3. Telephone Call (an automated telephone call to verify your authentication)
    • Click Save – setup complete!

    Q. I didn’t realise I’d need to scan a QR code at setup. I can’t do it, what should I do?

    A. Underneath the QR code, you will see a code and URL that you can copy and paste into the Microsoft Authenticator app to complete the setup. On the QR code scanning screen in the app, pick the option ‘or enter code manually’ to reach the page you should paste this information into, then hit finish.

    Q. Will I get asked to sign into the Outlook app on my mobile device?

    A. If you have the Microsoft Applications such as Outlook, Teams or Office 365 set up on your Mobile or Tablet, you will be asked to verify your identity. A prompt will appear on your phone asking you to approve the sign in. Click Approve.
