UWTSD was proud main sponsor of the inaugural Lord Mayor of Swansea Honours Awards Night 2016

University of Wales Trinity Saint David was the proud main sponsor of the inaugural Lord Mayor of Swansea Honours awards night at the city’s Brangwyn Hall. The event on Friday, July 29, saw stars of sport, stage, screen and local communities recognised for their contribution to Swansea.

The Venerable Randolph Thomas, Chair of the University Council, presented an award to radio presenter, actor and compere Kevin Johns, MBE, in recognition of his services to charity. Kevin is an Honorary Fellow of UWTSD.

Mr Thomas said: “I was so pleased that UWTSD was able to support the Lord Mayor's Honours Dinner to recognise individuals who have contributed so much to the life of the city. A city in which the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is playing such a major part in the transformation of education and economic and social development. Our University is truly a City University trying to improve the quality life of our citizens.”

Receiving his award, Kev Johns said: "This is the most generous city. This is my town and I'm honoured to help raise money for some amazing charities."

The evening also saw the celebration of achievements of movie star Catherine Zeta Jones, singer Bonnie Tyler, Swansea City stalwart Alan Curtis and former Wales international rugby union player Geoff Wheel, who attained 32 international caps.

Lord Mayor of Swansea Councillor David Hopkins said : "It was a fantastic evening where both well-known faces and people whose work for the community sometimes goes unnoticed were justifiably honoured for all they've done for Swansea.

"It's people like the honour winners that make Swansea the terrific city it is, so I'm enormously proud that the event was such an outstanding success.

"Not only did the evening celebrate everything that's great about Swansea, but it also helped raise thousands of pounds for the charities I'm supporting during my year as Lord Mayor - Maggie's Cancer Centre, The Paul Popham Fund and The Prince's Gate."
